KRG
minister for water resources investigates in Darbandikhan Lake
pollution
5
September: The
KRG minister for water resources, Tahsin Kadir, accompanied by a
delegation from the 10th division of the US forces in Iraq
visited Darbandikhan town today. They were received by senior
officials there including the town’s mayor and the director of
Darbandikhan dam. The KRG minister for water resources met with
directors of related KRG offices in the town.
At the beginning of the meeting director of Darbandikhan dam
talked about the reasons for Darbandikhan’s lake pollution,
saying annually the water of the lake changes its smell and
taste due to minimizing of water levels in the lake, indicating
that the lake is being polluted due to mixing its water with
sewage from Tanjaro river which consequently caused perishing
about one million of fishes.
Then, representatives of related offices presented their reports
about the issue. After listening to the reports, the KRG
minister for water resources said that the meeting is very
crucial since the pollution issue is related to the lives of
people in the town. He said that according to the results of
these reports they are not sure about the clarity of drinking
water in Darbandikhan town yet, pointing out that tests for the
dead fishes and the lake’s water should be made once again, so
that they might identify the real factors of the pollution and
deal with issue.
Finally, the KRG minster made a tour to the Darbandikhan Lake
and discussed the reasons for water shortages in the lake.
Price
Waterhouse Coopers to work with KRG on developing IT strategy
Erbil, 21 August 2008 (KRG) The Kurdistan Regional
Government has signed a $3.5million contract with PriceWaterhouseCoopers
(PwC), one of the world's leading professional services companies, to
develop an information technology strategy and roadmap for the KRG.Prime
Minister Nechirvan Barzani inspired the project through his conviction
that “information and communications are strategic assets, and
information and communications technology is a significant driving force
for the development of our Region and future ”.Mr Barzani tasked the
Department of Information Technology (DoIT), established in March 2007,
to be the lead government agency in the strategy and roadmap development
process. DoIT is responsible for the government’s IT policy, standards
and support .Mr Botan Mahmoud Osman, KRG Director General of IT and head
of DoIT, said, “The KRG, in line with global trends, is working towards
making IT a core part of its institutions through an IT master plan. We
made a strategic choice to partner with PwC to accomplish this goal.
This is happening at a time when our Region is taking serious steps
towards modernization. ”The integration of information communications
technology into the KRG's institutions will help to accelerate the flow
of information, producing better informed decision-making, better
planning, more efficient service delivery and a faster track towards an
electronic government in Kurdistan. There will be participation from all
levels of government to ensure the readiness of stakeholders to set out
their needs, to participate in the implementation of the policy and to
manage the change effectively. The two-year project will be carried out
in three phases. In the first phase, PwC will assess the KRG’s current
IT status and initiatives and analyse the way the various KRG
departments conduct their work. In the second phase, it will establish a
master plan, or IT strategy and roadmap, for the whole of the KRG that
will provide clear and comprehensive goals to be achieved within a given
period of time. The master plan will help the KRG make better investment
decisions in the area of information technology and help modernize it as
an organization .In its final phase, the project will develop a detailed
plan for three ministries or KRG institutions which will be selected
based on detailed analysis. One of the outcomes of this project will be
the transfer of knowledge to the KRG to enable DoIT, in collaboration
with the ministries, to develop further roadmaps for the future.
